2009 Summer Fieldwork Update

Social Determinants of Rural Health

This summer, Drs. Neil Hanlon and Greg Halseth are completing the final segment of a 5-year research initiative of the New Emerging Team for Health in Rural and Northern BC (NETHRN-BC), funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). The purpose of the “Social Determinants of Rural Health” research is to understand the role of informal and formal care networks for individuals and households under stress.

Research assistant and NRES grad student Joe LeBourdais traveled extensively this summer to Fort St. John, Mackenzie, Terrace, and Williams Lake to meet with focus groups  for a final-wrap up of the project where focus group participants were asked to comment on the research group's major findings to date, and to discuss any changes that have occurred over the past 24 months. By doing this re-cap of earlier field work, the NETHRN-BC team benefited from insight as to how to best distribute the research findings which highlight the challenges and successes that are faced by formal and informal care networks in these rural and remote communities.
