UNBC Geography Field School 2006
Geographies of Culture, Rights and Power:
The Global Order, Injustice and Resistance
|
August 2006
- 13 UNBC undergraduate students participated in a UNBC
Geography Field School to Guatemala with Dr. Catherine Nolin,
Assistant Professor of Geography. As part of our vision of
tranformative learning, we worked with Grahame Russell of Rights Action and Caren Weisbart of the Maritimes-Guatemala Breaking the Silence Network
to create a delegation-style course in order to explore the issues of
culture, rights, and power through the experiences of state violence,
genocide, and recovery in Guatemala.
All
students committed to creating and participating in a group community
presentation in Prince George upon our return to Canada. This website
grows out of the presentation which took place in October 2006 at
UNBC's Weldwood Theatre. More than 120 people attended the evening
slideshow and commentary which proved to be a highlight of our time
together as a group.
In
the pages that follow, the text of the evening's presentation is
interspersed with images from the slideshow. The speaker is identified
at the beginning of each section which is important because each participant wrote
his or her own text. This is truly a collaborative project.
We look forward to your comments and ask that you send them to Catherine Nolin at nolin@unbc.ca
