Welcome to the English Language Studies program at the University
of Northern British Columbia. Our unique program offers
international students a safe, yet challenging academic and social
environment in which to learn or improve their English language
proficiency and fluency. Through the UNBC English Language Studies
program, students will be immersed in Canadian traditions and culture, and
enjoy an exchange of ideas, customs, and languages.

English Language Studies Programs
UNBC's English Language Studies offers the following programs:
- 12 Week Extensive Programs
- Pre English for Academic Purposes (PEAP)
- English Language Studies 05 (Upper Beginner)
- Fundamental listening/speaking skills; grammar and sentence structure; writing simple paragraphs
- English Language Studies 10 (Low Intermediate)
- Speaking/listening skills; reading/vocabulary expansion; structuring paragraph.
- English For Academic Purposes (EAP)
- English Language Studies 20 (Intermediate)
- Begin academic track skills: writing longer paragraphs; listening to lectures; note-taking; oral presentations; mid-level reading and vocabulary; sentence structure.
- English Language Studies 30 (Upper Intermediate)
- Continue academic track skill: development in reading, vocabulary, oral/aural skills, short compositions leading to multi paragraph composition, interpersonal and public speaking.
- English Language Studies 40 (Advanced)
- Compose 5 paragraph essays to progressively longer research essays, researching topics, applying new vocabulary and demonstrating accuracy, structure and control of ideas. Focus on more abstract themes and issues.
- English Language Studies 50 (University Bridge)
- Acquire a wide range of skills that will allow a person to be fully able and
functional as a Canadian university student. Develop skills
necessary for university-level study, research, writing, and seminar skills. Assist in developing skills in oral presentation,
note-taking, reading academic materials, report writing, research and computer
use.
