The 12 Week Extensive English Language
Studies Program is designed to improve students' English proficiency
while promoting cultural exchange, responsibility, education, academic
success, and personal growth. The program is designed to provide
students with the necessary skills for speaking, listening, reading,
and writing through enhanced language strategies, study, and
problem-solving skills.

The 12 Week Extensive Program has 6 levels to choose from:
- Pre English for Academic Purposes (PEAP)
- English for Academic Purposes (EAP) -
ELS 20, ELS 30, ELS 40 and ELS 50 prepare the student
for university coursework by developing the broad skill set required to succeed
in an academic environment. The skill
and knowledge base includes: Speaking confidently
in public and interpersonally; generating and fielding questions; Listening with comprehension to academic
lectures; Summarizing both orally and in
prose; Critical Thinking, which involves
analyzing, evaluating and reconstructing ideas;
Vocabulary, to include 570 words from the Academic Word List (AWL); Writing,
to include note-taking as well as researched, structured, coherent essays; Reading critically, selectively, and
inferentially.

English Language Studies 05 (Upper Beginner)
This course is offered to students who have a good basic foundation of English skills. Through intensive listening, speaking, grammar and writing skill development, students will become prepared for advancement. Students will be able to both conjugate and use many regular and irregular verbs, hold basic conversations and construct simple five-sentence paragraphs. Students must achieve 73% in this level to
advance to ELS 10.
Prerequisites: Have
basic foundation of the English Language or UNBC English Language placement
examination.
English Language Studies 10 (Low Intermediate)
This level is offered to students possessing
semi-moderate English language proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and
speaking. The program focuses on applied grammar, listening, oral fluency,
pronunciation, vocabulary development, and writing structure, beginning with
sentences and progressing through to organized paragraphs. Students must achieve 73% in this level to
advance to ELS 20.
* Students with 73% or higher in ELS 10 will receive one (1) elective credit towards a UNBC undergraduate degree.
Prerequisites: 73% in the UNBC English Language Studies 05 or UNBC English Language placement
examination.
E nglish Language Studies 20 (Intermediate)
At this level, students develop basic academic English
skills. Through intensive reading and video lectures, the course introduces about a third of the high-frequency words commonly used in university studies. The student also develops skills in writing progressive more articulate paragraphs and in summarizing and note-taking. Speaking skills are developed in interpersonal activities and through oral presentations. Students must achieve 73% in this level to advance to ELS 30.
* Students with 73% or higher in ELS 20 will receive one (1) elective credit towards a UNBC undergraduate degree.
Prerequisites: 73% in the UNBC English Language Studies 10 or UNBC English Language placement
examination.
English Language Studies 30 (Upper Intermediate)
At this level students have begun to express
themselves coherently in speech and in writing. Focusing on academic skills,
students learn to organize and develop their ideas into well-structured short
compositions, employing their acquired grammar and vocabulary knowledge. The
selected reading and listening materials continue to expand the Academic Word
List and provide activities designed to help students review this vocabulary
and reproduce it appropriately. The listening materials expose students to various
academic topics and assist them in fine-tuning their note-taking, discussion
and oral presentation skills. Students must achieve 73% in this level to advance to ELS 40.
* Students with 73% or higher in ELS 30 will receive one (1) elective credit towards a UNBC undergraduate degree.
Prerequisites: TOEFL
score of at least 60 IBT or IELTS 5.0 minimum in all sections or 73% in the UNBC English
Language Studies 20 or UNBC English Language placement examination.
English Language Studies 40 (Advanced)
At this level students strive for
proficiency in all the skill areas required at the university level. Study and review of the Academic Word List is
completed. Students refine their
note-taking skills and write progressively longer academic essays based on
original internet-sourced research. Students learn to participate in seminars
and further refine their skills in public speaking. Students must
achieve 75% in this level to advance to ELS 50.
*Students with 73% or higher in ELS 40 will receive three (3) elective credits towards a UNBC undergraduate degree.
Prerequisites:
TOEFL score of at least 72 IBT or IELTS 5.5 minimum in all sections or 73% in the UNBC English
Language Studies 30 or UNBC English Language placement examination.
English Language Studies 50 (University Bridge)
Program Fees
Above: ELS students with their instructor.
In order to enhance the students' ability to learn and ensure personal
attention to students' specific learning needs, UNBC ELS classes are
small with an average of 12 students in each class and a standard
maximum of 18 students per class.
Certificate of Completion
All English Language Studies programs have formal assignments and examinations with official grades issued at the end of each program. However, students must achieve a minimum of 73% in ELS 05-40 to advance to the next level.
