POST-BACCALAUREATE DIPLOMA PROGRAM

The Post-Baccalaureate Diploma Program is postponed until further notice. Interested applicants may want to consider the Master of Education in Special Education as it is also on-line delivery models.

The Post-Baccalaureate Diploma Program is designed to help practising teachers update and refine teaching competencies and extend their teacher leadership capacity beyond their own classrooms. The goal of the program is to produce graduates who are highly competent practitioners capable of an informed and discerning approach to the application of educational research. The Post-Baccalaureate Diploma Program will be informed by the field of adult learning and emphasizes a “reflective practitioner” approach.

Please note that the PBDP is not a teacher certification program but is aimed at meeting the needs of teachers in the field. Those applicants interested in the UNBC  teacher education program, should click here

Program Overview

This Diploma Program is designed to improve lifelong learning opportunities for education professionals who may not be interested in pursuing a Master Of Education degree at this time. The Post-Baccalaureate Diploma Program will allow UNBC to better meet the professional development needs of school districts in northern BC through accessible credit courses that maintain the university’s reputation for quality programs.

The Diploma courses are an intermediate qualification between the Bachelor of Education and Master of Education degrees.   Instructors in all courses will be encouraged to invite students to examine their assumptions in terms of course readings. Students will be asked to draw on current literature for appreciative inquiry and critique of their own existing practice as well as to propose solutions for problems and develop proactive plans for growth.

Entry Requirements

The minimum requirement for admission to the Diploma Program is a four-year (120 credit hours) undergraduate degree from a UNBC-recognized university completed with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better. Applicants must have the ability to study and work in English.  An additional requirement for this Post-Baccalaureate Diploma is that students either possess a current teaching certificate or be admitted with the approval of the Education Program Chair.
There are no prerequisite courses for the Diploma Curriculum and Instruction courses, and courses may be taken in any order.

The Montessori Education courses will be offered primarily through a Summer Institute model, tentatively scheduled to begin in July, 2010.  The Montessori stream courses cannot be used for MACTE credential.

A maximum of 15 credits may be transferred to the Diploma Program from a UNBC-recognized post-secondary institution. Any credits accepted will be considered undifferentiated and will not be considered equivalent courses to the present PBDP courses. Transference of courses will be subject to the approval of the Registrar’s Office.

Credential

The proposed diploma is designed to meet the requirements of British Columbia’s Teacher Qualification Service (TQS). A 30-credit Post-Baccalaureate Diploma with an Integrated Program, or focused area of study, is a route by which teachers may increase their professional qualifications from Level 4 to Level 5.  With 30 credits of coursework above a bachelor’s degree, teachers are eligible for a salary increase equivalent to about 75% of the increase they would receive after earning a Master’s degree.

Interested teachers should visit the Teacher Qualification Services (TQS) website for further information.

Further, teachers often look for individual courses to increase their skills in targeted areas, especially in rural and northern areas where their teaching assignments are in areas other than the focus areas of their teacher education programs. This program proposes to meet that inservice need as well. Additionally, in many districts teachers are reimbursed for at least part of the fees they pay for credit courses.

Courses

Incoming Post-Baccalaureate students will be polled as to their course preferences and provided with a draft schedule of intended course offerings, subject to availability of instructors. Students will be responsible for ensuring that they take sufficient courses to complete the Diploma within ten years of enrolment in the Program. The Coordinator of the Post-Baccalaureate Diploma will ensure that individual students have sufficient support for planning their course selections.

Requirements

Completion of a Post-Baccalaureate Diploma is achieved with 30 credits of coursework, including two compulsory courses and eight electives. The focus areas offered at this time are Curriculum and Instruction or Montessori Education.
