Each
course may be taken independently as there are no prerequisites for
participation, however, it is recommended that modules be taken in
sequence.
XGIS 110-1 - GIS Module One - Data Creation and Manipulation
Explore GIS data in ARCGIS 9.x-ArcView (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcToolBox).
Acquire, display, manipulate and employ basic queries of spatial layers and attribute data.
Understand data models, data formats and layers in GIS.
View and manipulate satellite data and orthophotos.
Understand and employ spatial referencing to defing projection systems and re-project data (e.g. Albers, UTM, Geographic).
Employ basic editing of shapefile features and attribute tables.
Intro to Garmin GPS (download and editing in ArcView).
XGIS 112-1 - GIS Module Two - Software Customization, Data Symbolization, Labelling and Map Elements
Acquire and use basic VB scripts and software customization to enhance your workflow.
Explore map creation in ArcGIS 9.x - ArcView (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcToolbox). Create map elements, metre grids and graticules.
Develop graphic, dynamic labels and annotation and implement VB scropts for advanced lavelling.
Employ basic querying and table joins to enhance data interpolation.
Spatially reference and symbolize CAD data in an ARCGIS.
XGIS 113-1 - GIS Module Three - Geodatabases, Attributes and Data Conversion
Explore GIS personal geodatabases and aspatial databases in ARCGIS 9.x-ArcView (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcToolbox) and MS Access.
Data fields and their attributes, records,
table joins, relates and query languages will be used to track and
extract information, enhance your editing and generate new data layers.
Convert data formats (shapefile, CAD, coverage data), annotation and tables.
Understand and employ effective data integrity (spatial doman and precision).
XGIS 114-1 - GIS Module Four - Vector GIS Analysis and Modelbuilder
Explore landscape values with GIS vector analysis in ArcGIS 9.x ArcView (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcToolbox).
Problem solving based on real-world scenarios
(examples include riparian, patch and habitat analysis) will
demonstrate attribute table manipulation, buffers, dissolves,
appending/merging, clipping, intersecting and unioning of GIS data sets.
Implementation of more advanced queries will
be explored. Develop Geoprocessing tools into models via Modelbuilder
to streamline workflow.
XGIS 115-1 - GIS Module Five - Raster GIS Analysis
Explore landscape values with GIS raster
analysis in ArcGIS 9.x-ArcView (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcToolbox, Spatial
Analyst extensions).
Problem solving based on real-world examples (e.g. can you extract useful information for Predictive Ecosystem Mapping?).
Interpolate DEMs, and identify random and systematic errors within surfaces.
Implement cell-based analysis of raster categorical and elevation data.
Integrate vector and raster analysis.
XGIS 116-1 - GIS Module Six - Tins, Perspectives, Flys, Referencing and Rectification
Explore landscape values management with
GIS 3-D vector analysis in ArcGIS 9.x-ArcView (ArcMap, ArcCatalog,
ArcToolbox, 3-D Analyst).
Create and manipulate 3-D vector data, INS, 3-D perspectives and animated fly-throughs.
Explore ArcMap's image referencing and rectification of scanned maps, airphotos, and digital images.
