Mindfulness & Meditation for Healthcare Professionals

Mindfulness & Meditation for Healthcare Professionals

This offering will be tailored to front line workers, counsellors, social workers, life coaches and others working in the helping professions. Mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) strategies will be taught, including: breathing techniques, body scans to build personal and physical awareness, body/mind relaxation techniques such as autogenic relaxation (relaxing each body part at a time), and progressive muscle relaxation (flexing and releasing tension). Participants will be guided through a visualization in most sessions. These techniques will be deconstructed and the essential components will be reviewed so that participants can use these strategies on their own and with clients.

Additionally the following will be covered:
•Instruction in building safety and comfort (i.e., room set up, voice, counsellor energy levels)
•Detailed deconstruction of each meditation and relaxation technique so that students are aware of what the essential components are as well as how to facilitate these strategies
•Detailed instruction provided, demonstrated, and practiced regarding “attitude”/approach (i.e., students will participate in using these techniques to develop their own inner strength, confidence, self-compassion and trust)
•How to modify techniques with different populations
•Introduction to different uses of each strategy (i.e., different uses of body scans – i.e., as an observation tool, for relaxation, etc.)
•How to use meditation and breath to assist clients in affecting mood & energy (i.e., how to calm & soothe vs. energizing & revitalizing)
•Assistance, support and suggestions on how to build meditation into a daily discipline
•Discussion and embodied experience of practice
•Recognition and practice to feel its effects on energy levels, perspective taking and how this affects clients
•Support and instruction on how to use SELF to build stronger connections with clients, thus improving personal self-growth, professional practice and one’s ability to better support clients
•Review and experience intention, attention and attitude components
•Additional topics as relevant to the students’ needs/requests (i.e., conscious communication, self-compassion, RAIN technique, soften and sooth, stop and attend/observe, taking witness perspective, ego vs consciousness/energy, gratitude, forgiveness, conscious relationships, emotional dependency needs, working with self and other’s mindset, etc.)
