The BC Leadership Chair’s approach to Aboriginal environmental health research builds human health into the dynamic interrelations of ecosystem analysis.  We do not just study the health determinants of an individual, but those of the community, the population, and the immediate biosphere. This ecosystem approach is in tune with the Aboriginal view that health is determined not only by rates of disease and dysfunction, but also by the condition of the environment around and in the community. Protection of traditional food systems and promotion of healthy environment will help prevention of chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.   The BC Leadership Chair program covers a wide range of topics such as:
  • linking health and environmental data to identify potential health risks;
  • analysis of known environmental contaminants for improved monitoring;
  • identification of neurochemical markers to track the biological impact of contaminants such as mercury or organochlorines;
  • studying the impact of diet on the health effects of contaminants; and
  • studying the impact of climate change and other habitat changes on traditional indigenous foods and food security of the communities.
