This past Monday prospective students met with representatives from Social Work, Nursing, Education, Master of Business Administration, the Northern Medical Program, and Continuing Studies.
Shawna Hartman (BSc Natural Resources Management '00) updated her contact information on the Alumni website and was automatically entered into a draw for an iPod - and she won! Shawna received her prize at the Terrace Campus Open House. Shawna has been working as a biologist in Terrace for Triton Environmental Consultants Ltd. for 5 years.
Spencer and Jordan Hammond were little boys, 4 and 7 respectively when their mother, Jennifer Hammond started working at UNBC in the Communications Office. Today, Spencer is in his first year of General Arts while brother Jordan is in his second year of Resource Recreation and Tourism. Mom, Jennifer, is the Administrative Coordinator for the NMP.

- Tristan Pearce (BA International Studies '03) is currently working as a research associate in the Department of Geography at the University of Guelph. Tristan has been traveling thoughout the Arctic and will be spending March and April in Ulukhaaktok, NWT working on community adaptation planning to climate change. - David Hedalen (BA Geography '00) has been an Account Manager with Investment Property Databank (IPD) for the past 6 months in London, England. Prior to his employment in England, Dan completed a property related Master of Science degree in Spatial Planning from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden.

The new campus nearly triples UNBC's space in the community. It has
been renovated to include 7 classrooms and seminar rooms (including a
videoconference classroom and a 28-seat computer lab). There is office
space for graduate students, a student lounge and study area, and
research space. Wireless capacity has also been installed.
The 3rd Annual Memorial Dr. Bob Ewert Memorial Lecture, Dinner & Dance
The Ewert Lectureship is an annual lecture for continuing education for physicians and to inform the public of prevailing health issues.
At this year's event on January 27th at the Civic Centre, Dr. David Suzuki spoke on "The Challenge of the 21st Century: Rediscovering the Human Place in the World". During the event Dr. Frank Duffy, Dr. Jack McGhee and Dr. Hugh Stephen were posthumously inducted into the Northern Medical Society Hall of Fame for their contributions to medical services in the north.
NMP student Suzie Butow (BSc Environmental Planning '00) spoke on behalf of her fellow medical students. Suzie is in the class of 2010.
$$ to Support Student Research in Northern Studies

Anthropology professor Jim McDonald was in Ottawa to attend the national adjudication meeting of the Northern Scientific Training Program (NSTP) as an ex officio committee member from the Association of Canadian Universities for Northern Studies (ACUNS). NSTP annually distributes approximately $1 million dollars across Canada to support student research in northern studies.
Dr. McDonald reports that ACUNS has its own student awards administered as the Canadian Northern Studies Trust, and has added new award categories. At the undergraduate level, the Northern Resident Award provides 8 awards worth $5,000 and, at the graduate level, the Northern Resident Scholarship provides 4 awards worth $10,000. Another new award category for doctoral students in the natural sciences provides 5 awards worth $40,000.
UNBC students are eligible for all the ACUNS awards (totaling $299,000) including the northern residents awards. The application deadline is February 28.
Interim Vice Provost of Research and Graduate Programs Appointed
Dr. Cozzetto announced today that Dr. Ron Thring has been appointed to serve as the interim Vice Provost of Research and Graduate Programs. Dr. Thring is an accomplished researcher and an excellent teacher with a strong track record supervising graduate and undergraduate students. Ron has served as the Chair of the Chemistry, Environmental Science & Environmental Engineering Programs at UNBC and he brings a wealth of relevant administrative experience to his new role. Dr. Thring’s first task will be to establish a Graduate Council to develop the university’s application to the Ministry of Advanced Education for graduate student funding.
Arts and Quality of Life Survey
Preliminary descriptive results from a 5-community Arts and Quality of Life Survey, led by Alex Michalos, Director of UNBC's Institute for Social Research and Evaluation, are now available. This is the largest survey ever undertaken anywhere on the impact of arts-related activities on the quality of life. In October and November 2006, questionnaires were mailed out to 2000 randomly selected households in each of 5 BC communities; Comox Valley, Prince George, Nanaimo, Kamloops and Port Moody.
