UNBC
Grads Carole Williams, Brenda Dion & Heather Alton pictured with

The Convocation Reports were
created to showcase and promote UNBC's grads, awards recipients
and news to
our regions. These reports have been sent to all
communities in the BC's north including medical/dental offices, First
Nations Bands, restaurants, schools, libraries, Chambers of Commerce,
Media and municipal, provincial and federal government representatives.

| Offshore Oil and Gas

UNBC
marked the conclusion of the Northern Coastal Information and Research
Program with the release on June 15th in Prince Rupert of the final two
publications in the research series, UNBC Community-Collaborative
Studies on British Columbia Offshore Oil and Gas. For full story click here.
As
two dozen medical students ended their final exams in the first-ever
year for UNBC's Northern Medical Program, the Bank of Montreal
Financial Group made a significant donation to the Northern Medical

BCTF Maxwell Cameron Awards
Earl
Dodds and Melinda MacKinnon from the education program have each won a BC
Teachers Federation Maxwell Cameron Award as outstanding students
completing their final year in education in elementary and secondary
school teaching. For more on this award click here.
As of June 1st, John DeGrace fills the new position of University
Secretary and Registrar. John, as Registrar, exercised many of the functions associated with the new position. Kathy
Kielly's new title is Administrative Registrar and she will be
responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Registrar's Office. For full details click here.

According
to the March 21, 2005 issue of Fortune Magazine, Environmental
Engineers are the fastest-growing professional jobs, followed by
Network Systems and Datacom Analysts, then Personal Financial

Undergraduate Chemistry Conference
UNBC
students Heath de la Giroday, Camillia Presley and Bryndel Fell
presented research conducted under the supervision of Stephen Rader at the Western Canadian
Undergraduate Chemistry Conference at UVic last month. Heath received
one of ten awards for quality in presentation of
research. Bryndel and Heath were part of the first
graduating class of the new BSc in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

UNBC
Library's "Raging InfoManiacs" are proud to have raised more than $4000
for cancer research in this past month's Relay for Life event at Massey
Place Stadium! The team of 16, comprised of library staff and their
families and friends, more than doubled its fundraising goal, for which
many thanks go to library and other UNBC staff which gave so charitably
to the cause. The team would also like to express its gratitude for the
enthusiastic and generous support of community-minded companies such as
Schmitz Anderson and Nielsen (Accountants), Uniglobe Sunburst Travel,
and Pepsi, who provided funding for team t-shirts, the team tent, and
snacks and beverages for team members. The team looks forward to more good
times and successful fundraising at next year's event!
Former
UNBC Vice-President Finance, Pat Hibbetts was presented with the YWCA
Award for Women of Distinction in Business and the Professions in May
of this year. For more on this award click here.
Erin Douglas (BSc Hon Psychology 2003) is completing her MSc in Neuroscience at the
University of Calgary. In August, Erin will be moving to North
Carolina to start her career as a Project Research Analyst at the Duke
University MRI Research Centre.
Magali Buffet (BSc Chemistry 2004) has been awarded an Alberta Heritage Foundation for
Medical Research Studentship valued at $20,000. Magali works on
synthetic strategies to chemoenzymatic synthesis of a candidate
conjugate vaccine for candida albicans. Magali was also awarded an NSERC graduate scholarship. | |
