Araujo Back in Green and Gold
August 31, 2011
Prince George, B.C. – The UNBC Timberwolves Men’s Basketball
team is proud to announce the return of Jose Araujo to their roster. Jose hails from Toronto, Ontario but also has
citizenship in El Salvador and competes internationally with their men’s
national team.
Jose was a key member of the Timberwolves during the
2009/2010 season and was a crucial piece in helping them win the 2010 CCAA national
championship. After taking the last season
off for personal reasons, the 6’1” combo guard will once again fill a key role
with the current UNBC team.
“Jose will bring a lot to this group,” commented UNBC Head
Coach Todd Jordan. “He scores in bunches
and is without a doubt one of the best perimeter shooters in the country. His experience playing in big games both with
UNBC in the past and internationally with El Salvador will give us a battle
tested veteran who has a proven track record of performing well in big moments. He was also a great teammate when he was here
and the guys who played with him are happy to have his presence back in our
locker room.”
During Araujo’s original run at UNBC he was a first team
BCCAA all-star as well as a first team all-star at the 2010 CCAA National
Championships. He averaged 16.4 ppg in
just over 23 minutes per game. He shot
47% from the three point line and 82% from the free throw line.
Timberwolves Ink Commitment from Charles Barton
May 27, 2011
Prince George, B.C. – The Men’s Basketball Team at UNBC is
pleased to announce the addition of former Thompson Rivers University forward
Charles Barton to their roster.
Barton is coming off a year away from playing collegiate
basketball. He played his high school
basketball at Clarence Fulton Secondary School in Vernon alongside current UNBC
player Joel Rybachuk before moving on to play two seasons with the WolfPack in
Kamloops.
Barton will add length and versatility to the Timberwolves’
lineup. At 6’4”, he is an outstanding
leaper and a strong defensive player. He also has the offensive skill set to play up
and down head coach Todd Jordan’s line-up and will give the T-wolves the
ability to put more size on the floor at the shooting guard and small forward
positions when needed.
“Charles will be a great addition for us,” commented
Jordan. “Personality-wise he will be a
good fit with the guys and he has experience playing at the CIS level. He is a tremendous athlete and I think his
abilities will complement our up-tempo style of play.”
Barton is the fourth major commitment Coach Jordan has
received for next season. His recruiting
class also includes 6’10” local product Kevan Madsen, 6’6” Gabe Aubertin of
Kettle Falls,WA, and 5’7” point guard Billy Cheng of Richmond.
Billy Cheng
Commits to Timberwolves Basketball Program
May 10, 2011
Prince George, B.C. – UNBC Athletics is proud to announce
that Billy Cheng of Richmond, BC has committed to the Timberwolves men’s
basketball program.
Cheng is coming off a strong season as the starting point
guard for the British Columbia AAA high school boys’ basketball champion R.C.
Palmer Griffins. Cheng averaged 12
points per game, 6.5 assists per game, and 2.5 steals per game while
quarterbacking his team to the most prestigious title in BC high school sports. His accolades include being named a second
team all-star and the best defensive player of the AAA BC Championships. He was also named MVP of the Lower Mainland Championships
and co-MVP of the Richmond League.
The 5’7” guard will join 6’10” big man Kevan Madsen of
Prince George, BC and 6’6” forward Gabe Aubertin of Kettle Falls, WA in what is
shaping up to be a very strong recruiting class for Timberwolves Head Coach
Todd Jordan.
“I am extremely excited to add Billy to our roster,”
commented Jordan. “He is a proven winner
who has been well coached throughout his high school career. He is also an outstanding student who will
represent our program positively in the classroom. His high school coach was former Capilano
Blues coach Paul Eberhardt so I know he will come in with a good foundation and
the jump to the next level should be a smooth transition. Coach Eberhardt had him running an up-tempo
style of offense and Billy has proven he is able to make very good decisions while
playing at a fast pace. I think that
this ability will lend itself very well to the way we like to play.”
Cheng was a co-captain of the R.C. Palmer Griffins and has
also represented British Columbia the past three summers as a member of the
U15, U16, and U17 provincial teams.
