Student Advising - Planning Your Degree

Planning the degree you wish to take and learning how to get to graduation can be challenging. There are so many options for you to explore and several different Majors and Minors available to you.

Once you have chosen a degree then how do you get to graduation?
How do you know what courses to pick and when to take them?
What if you have transfer credit and what are the other graduation requirements besides specific classes?

We are here to help guide you on this path to earning your degree.

Choosing Your Major
Letter of Permission
Transfer Credit
Students must declare a Major at UNBC when they have completed 30 credit hours. The declaration form is below.

Do you know what Majors are available?  View the list of degrees available at UNBC online.

Your Student Advisor can provide you with Major options.  Complete our Checklist and bring it with you to an advising appointment.
Choosing Your Major Checklist
A Letter of Permission (LOP), is recommended for students that wish to enroll in a course at another institution while you are a current student at UNBC.

A LOP may be taken in conjunction with your currently enrolled courses or while you are away from UNBC for a semester, as you remain an ‘active’ student if you have a LOP issued.

Your Student Advisor can assist you with questions about selecting courses.

Transfer credit is assessed when you are admitted to UNBC from another institution, or when you take another course and send the Office of the Registrar an updated official transcript.

Academic Breadth
Preparing for a Professional Program
UNBC Career Centre
Students pursuing the degrees in Arts (BA), Commerce (BComm), Health Sciences (BHSc), and Science (BSc) are required to meet the UNBC Academic Breadth requirement as a condition of graduation. Each graduate is required to have successfully completed at least one course from each of the following four quadrants: Arts & Humanities, Physical Science, Natural Science, and Social Science.
If you are planning on applying to a Professional Program such as Medical, Optometry, Dentistry or Veterinary school there are often specific courses and exams you need to take to be eligible for admission.  Our Pre-Professional Requirements Sheet is a guide to help you with this planning process.

Please always check with the program you wish to apply to for updates and additional requirements.
The UNBC Career Centre has created a ‘What can I do with my degree?’ to help you learn what you can do with the major you have chosen.
